The Port of Los Angeles recorded a substantial 17% increase in cargo throughput for May compared to the previous year, reaching a total of 840,165 TEUs. This growth was primarily fueled by a 26% surge in loaded import containers, which amounted to 449,370 TEUs. Conversely, loaded exports experienced a 10% decrease, totaling 107,657 TEUs. The movement of empty containers also saw an uptick, rising by 18% to 283,138 TEUs. Cumulatively, the port has processed 4.12 million TEUs during the initial five months of the year.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this data indicates a strengthening import market through the Port of Los Angeles, potentially leading to continued demand for drayage and warehousing services in Southern California. The decline in loaded exports, however, suggests an ongoing trade imbalance, which could influence equipment repositioning strategies and backhaul rates. The increase in empty container movements might help alleviate equipment shortages for outbound shipments, but also reflects the import-heavy nature of current trade flows.
