Authorities in the French region of Normandy conducted extensive roadside checks on commercial road transport, finding a significant number of violations. Out of 149 trucks and vans inspected, 68 vehicles, representing almost half of the total, were found to be non-compliant with existing regulations. A notable specific infringement, recorded in 30 cases, involved drivers taking their mandatory weekly rest periods inside their vehicle cabins, which is prohibited under EU rules.
This enforcement action highlights ongoing efforts by European authorities to ensure compliance with the EU Mobility Package and other road transport regulations. The rule against taking weekly rest in the cabin is designed to improve driver welfare and road safety, preventing fatigue and ensuring proper rest conditions.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, such controls underscore the importance of strict adherence to driver hours regulations and rest period rules, especially for cross-border operations within the EU. Non-compliance can lead to significant fines, vehicle immobilization, and operational delays, impacting delivery schedules and costs. Forwarders should ensure their contracted carriers and drivers are fully aware of and comply with all aspects of the EU Mobility Package to mitigate these risks.
