Belgian customs officials successfully seized multiple tons of hashish on June 18 at the Port of Antwerp. The contraband was found concealed inside a shipping container located at quay 188. This particular container had arrived from Morocco and was officially manifested as carrying calcium sulfate, a common industrial compound. The discovery underscores the persistent challenges faced by port authorities in detecting illicit cargo amidst legitimate trade flows.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, such incidents can lead to increased scrutiny and potential delays for shipments originating from or transiting through regions known for drug trafficking. While this specific event did not cause widespread port congestion, a rise in similar seizures could prompt stricter customs checks, impacting vessel turnaround times and potentially increasing the administrative burden for legitimate cargo. Forwarders should remain vigilant regarding cargo declarations and origin points, as enhanced security measures could affect lead times and operational costs.
