Shanghai-listed Jinjiang Shipping, a subsidiary of Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), has confirmed options for four additional 1,900 TEU containerships with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. These new contracts, signed by Jinjiang's wholly-owned subsidiary Manqiang Shipping, effectively double the carrier's recent feeder vessel newbuilding initiative. The vessels are being constructed by Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding and Jiangsu Yangzi Hongyuan Shipbuilding.
This fleet expansion suggests Jinjiang Shipping's commitment to strengthening its presence in regional and feeder routes, likely within Asia. For freight forwarders and operations managers, an increase in feeder capacity can lead to improved schedule reliability and potentially more competitive rates on intra-Asia lanes, as more vessels become available to connect larger hub ports with smaller regional ones. It could also alleviate some pressure on transshipment operations by providing more direct or frequent feeder services.
The doubling of this order signifies a long-term investment in fleet modernization and growth, aiming to meet anticipated demand in its operational areas. While the immediate impact on global rates might be minimal, it contributes to the overall supply of container tonnage, particularly for smaller vessel segments.
