Wilhelmsen Ship Management has announced the integration of the Royal Tern, a methanol dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), into its managed fleet. This vessel is the latest addition, following the Arctic Tern, which was delivered in July. The Royal Tern is equipped with several innovative features aimed at improving energy efficiency and environmental performance. These include an air lubrication system, an energy storage battery system, and an AMP shore power connection.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the introduction of such vessels signifies a continued industry shift towards more sustainable shipping solutions. The use of methanol as a dual-fuel option, combined with other energy-saving technologies, could contribute to lower emissions in the automotive logistics sector. This development may influence carrier selection for shippers prioritizing green supply chain initiatives and could potentially impact future bunker fuel surcharges as alternative fuel infrastructure develops.
