Thai Union, a major seafood company, has selected Zunibal, a Spanish marine technology firm, to upgrade the electronic monitoring (EM) systems across its tuna longliner fleet. This collaboration will see the installation of new onboard equipment and provision of technical support for vessels operating in the Indian Ocean. The primary goal is to improve the collection and analysis of fishing data, thereby enhancing the sustainability and transparency of tuna sourcing.
For freight forwarders and supply chain analysts, this development signifies a growing trend towards greater traceability and compliance in seafood supply chains. While not directly impacting freight rates or capacity, it underscores the increasing importance of verifiable sustainability practices, which can influence sourcing decisions and market access in the long term. Shippers of seafood products may face stricter requirements for data reporting and origin verification as such technologies become more widespread.
