Korean Register (KR) and Hanwha Ocean have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development of two distinct design concepts for an 18,000 cubic meter (cbm) LNG bunkering vessel. Each concept will incorporate a different cargo containment solution, aiming to address various bunkering and operational requirements within the maritime industry. One design will integrate Hanwha Ocean's proprietary high manganese steel cargo tank solution, known as MCTIB (High Manganese Steel Cargo Tank Independent Type-B). The alternative concept will utilize independent Type-C tanks.
Hanwha Ocean will be responsible for leading the basic design phase and conducting vessel performance assessments. Their role will also encompass overseeing the development of the cargo tank arrangement, the LNG bunkering system, and the overall operational concept for both vessel types.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the development of new LNG bunkering vessel designs signifies a continued trend towards cleaner marine fuels. Increased availability of LNG bunkering infrastructure, including specialized vessels, supports the broader adoption of LNG as a shipping fuel. This could lead to more stable pricing and wider routing options for LNG-powered vessels, potentially impacting vessel selection and operational costs for environmentally conscious shippers.
