Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) recently conducted a naming ceremony for the Tsurugidake, an LNG dual-fuel Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC). The vessel was constructed at the Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering yard and is destined for Equinor ASA under a time charter contract. This delivery marks the third such dual-fuel VLCC that MOL has provided to Equinor, highlighting a commitment to more sustainable shipping practices.
The Tsurugidake is equipped with an LNG fuel tank exceeding 10,000 cubic meters, enabling it to undertake extended voyages without needing to refuel frequently. This capacity is crucial for VLCCs operating on long-haul routes, ensuring operational efficiency while utilizing a cleaner-burning fuel.
For freight forwarders and supply chain analysts, the introduction of more LNG dual-fuel vessels like the Tsurugidake signifies a broader industry trend towards decarbonization. While VLCCs primarily transport crude oil, the increasing adoption of alternative fuels across vessel types can influence bunker availability and pricing in major bunkering hubs. This move by MOL and Equinor contributes to a more sustainable fleet, potentially impacting future emissions regulations and the overall environmental footprint of global shipping. Forwarders should monitor the growth of such fleets as it may lead to more eco-friendly shipping options and potentially influence carrier selection for environmentally conscious shippers.
