The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) recently hosted a delegation from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government's Transport and Logistics Bureau at its VENEX green methanol production facility in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. The VENEX plant, a joint venture between Towngas and Foran Energy Group Company Limited, is significantly increasing its annual production capacity to 300,000 tonnes.
This initiative is part of the Ant Forest ecological project, which focuses on cultivating sand willow and other shrubs to prevent desertification. The green methanol is produced using waste branches collected from these ecological efforts, demonstrating a circular economy approach to fuel production.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the scaling up of green methanol production is a positive development for the decarbonization of maritime logistics. Increased availability of alternative fuels like methanol could support carriers in meeting their emissions reduction targets, potentially influencing future bunker choices and associated costs. While direct rate impacts are not immediate, a more robust supply chain for green fuels could stabilize pricing and offer more sustainable shipping options in the long term. This also signals a growing commitment from Asian energy providers to support the green transition in shipping.
The expansion of the VENEX plant's capacity indicates a strategic move towards greater supply of green methanol, which is crucial for the maritime industry's shift away from conventional fossil fuels. This development supports the broader industry trend of investing in and adopting cleaner energy solutions for shipping.
