The European Commission (EC) has officially sanctioned the joint control of Avenir LNG by Stolt-Nielsen and NYK. Avenir LNG focuses on small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations and bunkering services. This regulatory clearance comes after Stolt-Nielsen, a chemical tanker operator, took complete ownership of Avenir LNG in April 2025, acquiring all shares previously held by Golar LNG and Aequitas. Subsequently, in March of the current year, Stolt-Nielsen announced its intention to sell a 50% stake in Avenir LNG to Japan's NYK.
From a freight forwarder's perspective, this development signals a consolidation in the LNG bunkering market. While not directly impacting container or air cargo rates, it could influence the availability and pricing of LNG as a marine fuel for vessels that utilize it. Forwarders managing shipments on LNG-powered vessels might see long-term stability in bunkering services, but immediate operational changes are unlikely. The EC's approval indicates that this ownership change is not expected to create monopolistic conditions or significantly alter market dynamics within the European region, suggesting a continuation of current service levels and competitive pricing for LNG bunkering.
