Aqua superPower, a specialist in fast-charging infrastructure, and Hyke, a ferry developer, have formally partnered through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Their joint objective is to establish a comprehensive blueprint for implementing electrified urban ferry networks. This initiative seeks to leverage existing inland waterways in cities, which are currently underutilized, to create sustainable transport corridors.
The rationale behind this collaboration is to introduce clean, efficient, and appealing passenger transport options via electric ferries. This approach is expected to alleviate pressure on urban road networks and supplement existing public transport systems. The successful deployment of such networks requires not only innovative vessel design but also robust charging infrastructure.
For freight forwarders and logistics operations, while this development directly impacts passenger transport, it signals a broader trend towards electrification in maritime transport. Increased investment in electric charging infrastructure for smaller vessels could potentially pave the way for similar solutions in short-sea shipping or last-mile waterborne logistics in urban areas, leading to reduced emissions and potentially new multimodal routing options in the future.
