Christian Stickel, co-owner and director of German transport company Spedition Stickel, has stated that the temporary relaxation of Germany's Sunday driving ban for trucks, enacted to mitigate challenges from extremely low water levels, will not resolve the underlying capacity problems within the road freight industry. While the measure offers some operational flexibility, it does not tackle the root causes of driver and vehicle shortages.
For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this indicates that despite short-term relief, structural issues in German road transport persist. Capacity will likely remain tight, particularly for inland routes, potentially leading to continued rate pressure and challenges in securing timely transport. Forwarders should not expect significant improvements in lead times or cost reductions solely from this temporary regulatory change.
Stickel emphasized the need for Germany to expedite the implementation of digital continuing education programs for drivers. This suggests a focus on improving driver training and retention as a long-term solution to the capacity crunch.
