The Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) has voiced concerns regarding the current system for notifying shippers about new ocean freight surcharges. The organization states that its members often do not receive timely information about these additional costs, and that the online tariff systems maintained by carriers are overly complex and difficult to interpret.
This issue primarily affects agricultural exporters and other shippers who rely on predictable and transparent pricing to manage their supply chains. The lack of clear, advance notice for surcharges can lead to unexpected cost increases, disrupting financial planning and potentially impacting competitiveness in international markets.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this situation creates significant challenges. Without timely and accessible information on carrier surcharges, accurately quoting clients and managing shipment costs becomes more difficult. Forwarders may face unexpected charges from carriers that they cannot pass on to shippers, or they may need to absorb these costs, impacting profitability. Improved notification rules would enhance transparency, allowing forwarders to better anticipate and communicate cost changes to their customers, thereby improving trust and operational efficiency. It would also enable better contract negotiations and rate management.
AgTC is seeking regulatory changes to ensure that carriers provide clearer, more timely, and easily digestible notifications of all new surcharges and tariff adjustments, moving beyond the current system of complex online postings.
