German trailer manufacturer Kögel has initiated an "SOS" campaign in Burtenbach, Bavaria, to draw attention to the potential negative impacts of European VECTO regulations on the transport industry. The company staged a protest using sixteen trailers arranged to spell out "SOS," symbolizing their distress over what they consider to be unachievable CO2 emission reduction targets for trailers.
Kögel argues that these stringent environmental goals, mandated by the European Union, are not realistically attainable within the given timeframe and could lead to significant job losses across the sector. The protest aimed to highlight the economic challenges and operational difficulties that trailer manufacturers and the wider transport industry face in meeting these ambitious targets.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, these regulations could translate into increased costs for new trailer equipment as manufacturers struggle to innovate and comply. This might also lead to a slower adoption of greener technologies if the targets are perceived as overly burdensome, potentially impacting fleet renewal strategies and the overall cost of road transport. The uncertainty surrounding compliance could also affect long-term investment planning for transport companies.
The campaign seeks to prompt a re-evaluation of the VECTO regulations by EU policymakers, urging for more pragmatic and achievable CO2 targets that balance environmental objectives with economic realities and industry capabilities.
