In the past year, machinery damage or failure was identified as the leading cause of shipping incidents worldwide, representing more than half of the total reported events. Following this, vessel collisions constituted the second most frequent type of incident. Fires and explosions, while third in frequency, continue to be a major safety concern across the maritime industry, particularly for large vessels.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, the prevalence of machinery failures and fires underscores the importance of robust risk management and cargo insurance. These incidents can lead to significant delays, cargo damage, or total loss, impacting supply chain reliability and increasing costs. Forwarders should closely monitor carrier safety records and ensure their clients have adequate coverage to mitigate financial exposure from such events. The ongoing risk of fires also highlights the need for proper cargo declaration, especially for hazardous materials, to prevent onboard incidents.
