The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) has formally requested a review of the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) proposed changes to the Direct Air Waybill (DAWB) framework. FIATA's primary concerns revolve around the potential for these proposed revisions to create significant legal uncertainty within the air cargo industry and substantially expand the liability exposure for freight forwarders. The organization highlights that under the new framework, forwarders could be held responsible for shipments even when their role is primarily that of an intermediary.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development signals a potential shift in risk allocation for air cargo. If the proposed changes are implemented, forwarders might face increased financial and legal responsibility for shipments, potentially impacting their operational procedures, insurance requirements, and contractual agreements with both shippers and airlines. This could necessitate a re-evaluation of current business practices and a potential increase in operational costs to mitigate the heightened liability.
