SAAM Towage, a leading towage services provider, has announced an order for five new tugboats from Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar. These vessels are slated for deployment across various ports in Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, and Chile, significantly bolstering SAAM's operational capacity in the Americas.
The new tugs are designed by Robert Allan and will feature Kongsberg thrusters and CAT engines, indicating a focus on modern, efficient, and powerful vessels. This order is a key component of SAAM Towage CEO Hernan Gomez's ambitious 2030 fleet renewal plan, which aims to modernize and expand the company's asset base to meet growing demand and enhance service reliability.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this fleet expansion signals improved port efficiency and reliability in the mentioned Latin American countries. Increased tugboat availability can reduce vessel waiting times, especially for larger container ships and specialized cargo vessels requiring assistance for berthing and unberthing. This could lead to better schedule adherence and potentially smoother cargo flows through these key regional ports, benefiting overall supply chain predictability.
