MarineSolar Energy Solutions has announced successful pilot trials of its NanoDeck photovoltaic (PV) energy system aboard Rio Tinto's vessel, the RTM Cook. Over several months at sea, the system demonstrated its capacity to harness solar power, leading to reduced fuel consumption. The technology also proved exceptionally durable, maintaining operation and data transmission despite exposure to powerful waves and high winds.
This development signifies a step towards integrating renewable energy sources into maritime operations. For freight forwarders and shippers, the wider adoption of such technologies could contribute to more sustainable supply chains and potentially influence bunker adjustment factors (BAF) in the long term, as carriers seek to lower operational costs and meet decarbonization targets. While immediate rate impacts are unlikely, it signals a trend towards greener shipping options.
Early results indicate the system's potential to offer both carbon reduction benefits and access to onboard renewable power for ship operators.
