Preliminary figures from ACT Research show that North American Class 8 truck orders reached 18,700 units in September, marking a 9.5% reduction compared to the same period last year. This downturn suggests that truck buyers are currently hesitant to commit to new purchases, opting instead for a "wait-and-see" strategy.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, a sustained decline in new truck orders could lead to tighter road freight capacity in the future. Reduced fleet expansion or replacement by carriers might result in increased lead times for truckload bookings and potentially higher rates, especially for long-haul routes. Shippers may experience challenges securing equipment, necessitating earlier booking and potentially exploring alternative transport modes or optimizing existing loads.
