BIMCO has officially adopted an addendum to its Shipman 2009 and Baltime 1939 standard time charter party agreements. This new clause is designed to facilitate the retrofitting of Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) on vessels already under charter. The initiative responds to the shipping industry's increasing focus on enhancing fuel efficiency and overall ship performance, driven by decarbonization mandates, evolving regulations, and escalating operational expenses.
This development provides a clear framework for shipowners and charterers to negotiate and implement ESD installations. Previously, such retrofits often required complex, bespoke agreements, which could lead to delays and disputes. The standardized addendum aims to simplify these procedures, making it easier for both parties to agree on the terms, responsibilities, and cost implications of installing technologies like propeller boss cap fins or pre-swirl stators.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this means a more predictable environment for vessel upgrades. While the direct impact on rates or capacity is not immediate, the long-term effect could be a more fuel-efficient and environmentally compliant global fleet. This could eventually contribute to more stable bunker costs and potentially lower emissions surcharges. Forwarders should be aware that vessels undergoing such retrofits might experience temporary off-hire periods, which could affect schedule reliability or lead to short-term capacity adjustments on specific routes.
The adoption of this addendum is a proactive step by BIMCO to support the industry's transition towards greener shipping practices, aligning with broader environmental goals and regulatory pressures.
