Spain's national rail infrastructure manager, Adif, has officially approved the Murcia freight terminal for rail highway operations. This authorization means that freight companies can now utilize this hub to facilitate the transport of semi-trailers and other intermodal loading units via rail.
This development is significant for freight forwarders and logistics operators as it expands the network of available terminals for intermodal services in Spain. The ability to move goods, particularly road-based semi-trailers, onto rail can offer advantages such as reduced road congestion, lower emissions, and potentially more cost-effective long-haul transport. For operations managers, this opens up new routing possibilities and capacity options, especially for shipments to and from the Murcia region.
Increased rail highway capacity can contribute to greater supply chain resilience and efficiency by diversifying transport modes. It may also help mitigate the impact of potential road transport disruptions or driver shortages by providing an alternative for certain cargo types.
