Egypt has initiated the development of eight logistics corridors designed to connect the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea. This ambitious project seeks to transform Egypt into a prominent global logistics hub, leveraging rail infrastructure to create what is being described as a "Suez Canal on rails." The corridors are intended to facilitate the efficient movement of goods across the country, enhancing its strategic position in international trade.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this development could introduce new routing options for cargo moving between Asia, Africa, and Europe. The establishment of these rail corridors may offer an alternative or complementary transit solution to the traditional Suez Canal waterway, potentially reducing transit times and offering more predictable schedules, especially for certain types of cargo. This could lead to increased capacity and potentially impact freight rates on key trade lanes, diversifying supply chain strategies and mitigating risks associated with sole reliance on maritime routes through the canal.
