Lufthansa is actively pursuing a significant increase in its ownership of TAP Air Portugal, aiming for a near-total acquisition of the remaining shares. This development follows Portugal's recent decision to grant Lufthansa a minority stake in the Portuguese flag carrier. According to Lufthansa's Chief Financial Officer, Till Streichert, separate discussions are progressing regarding the acquisition of an additional 50.1% of TAP's shares.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this potential acquisition could lead to several impacts. The integration of TAP into Lufthansa's extensive network might result in optimized cargo routes, potentially increasing capacity on certain trade lanes, particularly between Europe, South America, and Africa, where TAP has a strong presence. Forwarders might see streamlined booking processes and improved transit times as the two airlines align their operations. However, initial integration phases could also bring temporary adjustments to schedules or service offerings. Rate impacts are uncertain but could stabilize or become more competitive on routes where Lufthansa gains increased market share.
