Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) officially opened its new 337,000 sq ft air cargo facility on October 14, following 19 months of construction. This significant expansion provides the airport with the capacity to accommodate five Boeing 747-400 aircraft simultaneously, marking a substantial upgrade to its airfreight infrastructure. The facility also features enhanced truck docking capabilities, improving the efficiency of cargo transfer.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this new facility at MKE means increased air cargo capacity and potentially more direct routing options for shipments to and from Wisconsin and the surrounding region. The ability to handle multiple large freighters simultaneously, combined with improved truck access, could lead to faster turnaround times and reduced ground handling delays. This development may also attract new cargo carriers or expand existing services, offering more choices for shippers and potentially impacting air cargo rates positively due to increased competition and efficiency.
