Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) reported a significant 8% year-on-year increase in air cargo tonnage for September, processing a total of 127,750 tonnes. This growth contributes to a 10% year-to-date rise in cargo volumes for the Dutch airport. Concurrently, Maastricht Aachen Airport, which serves as an extended cargo hub for Schiphol, achieved an even more substantial 17% growth in cargo volumes over the same period.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this sustained growth at a major European air cargo hub like Schiphol indicates robust demand in airfreight markets. Increased volumes typically suggest stable or potentially rising air cargo rates, especially on key trade lanes served by AMS. The strong performance of Maastricht Aachen Airport also highlights its growing importance as an alternative or supplementary gateway, potentially offering additional capacity and routing options for shippers and forwarders looking to avoid congestion or find competitive pricing at the primary hub.
