The world's first Everllence B&W G80 engine, engineered to operate on ethanol, has successfully undergone its research and development testing phase. The trials were conducted at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery division located in Korea. This engine is designated for the third vessel in a series of ten Very Large Ore Carriers (VLOCs) commissioned by Shandong Shipping.
This development represents a notable advancement in the maritime industry's efforts to adopt alternative fuels and reduce carbon emissions. The successful testing of an ethanol-capable engine for a VLOC demonstrates the feasibility of using lower-carbon fuels in large bulk carriers, which traditionally rely on heavy fuel oil.
