The European Union's REFEST project, focused on advancing the hybridisation of European fishing fleets, has achieved a significant milestone. Project partners EAS Batteries and Klaipėda University have successfully validated new battery models specifically engineered to perform optimally in challenging cold-water environments. These validated models are projected to offer a lifespan increase of more than 10% compared to existing solutions.
The development involved extensive testing of various battery cells to identify the most suitable chemistry for low-temperature operation. The selected lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) cell chemistry was chosen for its ability to combine a long cycle life with robust performance in cold weather, providing a strong foundation for the project's goals.
