Mercitalia Shunting & Logistics, which operates as part of the Italian state-owned FS Logistix group, has announced the acquisition of eight EUROLIGHT Dual locomotives from Stadler. These Bo'Bo' configuration hybrid units are expected to significantly improve the company's shunting and logistics capabilities.
This investment reflects a broader trend in the European rail sector towards modernizing fleets with more environmentally friendly and efficient technologies. Hybrid locomotives offer the advantage of operating on both electrified and non-electrified lines, providing greater versatility for shunting operations and last-mile deliveries within industrial areas and ports.
For freight forwarders and logistics managers, this development indicates a potential for improved efficiency and reliability in rail freight services within Italy. The introduction of modern hybrid locomotives can lead to faster turnaround times in marshalling yards and better connectivity for rail-based shipments, particularly for the crucial first and last-mile legs of journeys. Enhanced operational flexibility could also help mitigate disruptions and improve overall schedule adherence for rail cargo.
The delivery and integration of these new locomotives are anticipated to contribute to Mercitalia's strategic goals of optimizing its rail operations and supporting sustainable logistics practices across its network.
