Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has secured Approval in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its novel electric-propelled, wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS)-equipped very large ammonia carrier (VLAC). This recognition, announced at Gastech 2026, validates a new vessel design aimed at facilitating the safe, efficient, and low-carbon transportation of ammonia.
The VLAC concept, developed internally by Jiangnan Shipyard, combines several advanced technologies. It features ammonia-fueled power generation, an electrified propulsion system, and wind assistance, all working in concert to significantly improve the vessel's energy efficiency. This integrated approach is designed to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and reduce operational emissions.
For freight forwarders and shippers, the development of such vessels signals a future shift towards more sustainable maritime logistics. As the industry moves towards decarbonization, the availability of low-carbon shipping options, particularly for commodities like ammonia, will become crucial. While this is an AiP and not an operational vessel yet, it indicates a trend towards specialized, greener fleets that could impact future routing decisions, carrier selection, and potentially introduce new surcharges or incentives for eco-friendly transport.
