Lloyd's Register (LR) has partnered with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) to advance the design of a next-generation LNG carrier. The collaboration focuses on a 185,000 cubic meter (cbm) vessel incorporating a hybrid-electric propulsion system. An Approval in Principle (AiP) was formally signed at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok, marking a significant step in this development.
The primary objective of this AiP is to meticulously develop and verify the safety aspects of the vessel's hybrid-electric propulsion system. Key areas of focus include strengthening the overall system architecture and ensuring robust redundancy philosophies are in place to enhance operational reliability and safety.
