GTT, a Paris-based engineering company, has announced a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel containment solution specifically designed for container ships. This innovative system features standardized cubic tank geometry and an enhanced membrane containment system capable of operating at 2 barg pressure.
The primary objective of this new technology is to streamline the integration of LNG fuel tanks into vessel designs. By standardizing the geometry, GTT aims to help shipyards reduce design complexity and shorten overall construction schedules. Furthermore, the solution is engineered to allow for a higher degree of automation during the construction process, which can further improve efficiency.
From a freight forwarder's perspective, this development is significant for several reasons. The design maximizes the available space for cargo, which can lead to improved vessel economics by allowing more goods to be transported per sailing. Increased operational performance due to the higher operating pressure could also contribute to more reliable schedules and potentially lower fuel costs for carriers, which might translate into more stable or competitive freight rates. The technology has already received Approvals in Principle (AiPs) from Lloyd's Register, indicating its technical feasibility and compliance with safety standards.
