Construction has officially begun on a new hybrid ferry designed by Chartwell Marine for SPM Ferries. The vessel, named JANOT, is being built at AISTER’s shipyard in Spain. This new ferry is intended to replace the current vessel, Jeune France, and will serve the route between the French collective of Saint-Pierre and the neighboring island of Langlade, with operations anticipated to start in 2027.
The design for the JANOT was commissioned by SPM Ferries earlier this year to cater to the specific needs of the rural island community. The vessel will have the capacity to carry up to 100 passengers along with cargo. A key feature of the new ferry is its hybrid propulsion system, which has been specifically chosen and configured to suit the unique operational environment of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon region.
