Chart Industries has confirmed it will supply the liquid hydrogen fuel systems for Samskip's SeaShuttle 1 and 2, which are being developed as the world's inaugural hydrogen-powered container vessels. These ships are currently under construction and are slated to begin service on the route between Rotterdam and Oslo in 2027. This initiative is a component of the European Union-backed HyShip project, which aims to showcase the viability of liquid hydrogen in achieving zero-emission operations for commercial maritime transport.
The project integrates advanced storage technology, fuel conditioning systems, bunkering interfaces, and comprehensive safety solutions to facilitate the use of liquid hydrogen. This development is significant for the maritime industry's decarbonization efforts, particularly within Europe.
