Mitsui E&S DU Co. has announced the successful completion of the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for the first WinGD large marine engine capable of running on methanol dual-fuel, manufactured in Japan. The engine, specifically a DU-WinGD 6X82DF-M-1.0 LP-SCR model, also marks a significant milestone as the first WinGD large marine engine produced at the MITSUI E&S Tamano Works facility. This development underscores Japan's commitment to advancing sustainable maritime propulsion technologies.
The engine is slated for installation on the lead vessel of a four-ship series commissioned by an undisclosed domestic shipowner. The primary objective of this dual-fuel technology is to enable a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping operations through the use of green methanol as fuel.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this signifies a continued trend towards decarbonization in the maritime sector.
