RINA, a global inspection, certification, and consulting engineering company, has entered into two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with PTT, Thailand's national energy company. These agreements establish a framework for joint research and collaboration across the maritime and energy sectors, with a strong emphasis on innovation and decarbonization.
Under the MoUs, RINA Consulting will contribute its engineering consultancy expertise, while RINA Services will handle certification, verification, assurance, and classification activities. The scope of potential collaboration and knowledge sharing is broad, encompassing critical areas such as alternative and low-carbon fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), vessel electrification, digitalization strategies, and carbon management solutions. The partnership will also explore hydrogen readiness, cold energy utilization, and potential applications for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
For freight forwarders and supply chain professionals, this collaboration signifies a long-term commitment to sustainable practices within the maritime and energy industries. Increased focus on alternative fuels and vessel electrification could lead to new bunkering options, evolving vessel designs, and potentially higher operational costs as greener technologies are adopted. The emphasis on digitalization might also streamline processes and improve supply chain visibility in the future. Forwarders should monitor these developments for potential impacts on vessel routing, fuel surcharges, and the overall carbon footprint of their shipments, especially for routes involving Thailand and Southeast Asia.
