MacGregor has been awarded a contract to supply a 165-tonne active heave compensated (AHC) crane for Jan De Nul's upcoming Ulstein SX121 newbuild vessel. This advanced crane system is intended to facilitate diverse offshore lifting activities, with operations projected to commence in 2028. The agreement also contains an option for MacGregor to provide a similar crane for a potential second vessel in Jan De Nul's newbuild program.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this development signals continued investment in specialized offshore heavy-lift capabilities. The addition of such a powerful crane on a new vessel enhances the capacity for complex project cargo movements, particularly for the offshore energy sector. This could lead to more efficient handling of large components for wind farms or subsea installations, potentially influencing project timelines and specialized vessel availability in the future. Forwarders involved in breakbulk and project logistics should note this expansion in the global heavy-lift fleet, as it contributes to the overall capacity for oversized and critical cargo movements.
