Ethiopian Airlines has announced the extension of CEO Mesfin Tasew's contract until August 7, 2027. This marks the third time his tenure has been prolonged since he took the helm. The decision to extend his leadership comes on the heels of a robust financial year for the airline, fiscal 2025/26.
During this period, Ethiopian Airlines reported a 20 percent increase in revenue, reaching US$9.1 billion. Passenger traffic also saw a notable rise of 10 percent, totaling 20.7 million travelers. Crucially for freight forwarders, air cargo volumes expanded by 16 percent, amounting to 897,000 metric tonnes. This consistent growth across key operational metrics likely underpinned the board's decision to maintain leadership continuity.
For freight forwarders and supply chain professionals, this extension suggests stability in Ethiopian Airlines' cargo operations and strategic planning. The continued focus on expanding cargo volumes indicates a reliable partner for airfreight capacity, particularly for routes served by the airline. Forwarders can anticipate consistent service levels and potentially further investment in cargo infrastructure under Tasew's continued leadership, contributing to more predictable air cargo options.
