Dubai Customs recently intercepted more than 70 million illicit cigarettes concealed in nine separate air export shipments. These shipments, totaling approximately seven tonnes, were falsely declared as clothing and were destined for a European country. The seizures occurred across three different air cargo facilities in Dubai. Intelligence-led risk targeting played a crucial role, linking all nine shipments to a single importer.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this incident highlights the ongoing vigilance required in air cargo operations, particularly concerning declared cargo versus actual contents. Increased scrutiny on shipments originating from or transiting through Dubai, especially those declared as common goods like clothing but with unusual weight or volume profiles, might be anticipated. This could lead to longer inspection times and potential delays for certain cargo categories, emphasizing the importance of accurate documentation and robust compliance checks to avoid disruptions.
