DP World Callao has started trial operations of a shore power system at the Port of Callao in Peru. This development positions the terminal as the first in Latin America to implement such technology, enabling vessels to connect to the port's electrical grid while docked. The primary goal of this initiative is to significantly reduce emissions from ships by allowing them to shut down their auxiliary engines, thereby decreasing air pollution and noise in the port area.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this represents a step towards greener supply chains, particularly for cargo moving through the West Coast of South America. While direct rate impacts are unlikely in the short term, the long-term trend towards sustainable shipping may introduce new compliance requirements or incentives for carriers and shippers.
