Climeon, a company based in Sweden, has announced the successful commissioning and handover of its second HeatPower 300 system. This installation concludes a two-vessel retrofit initiative for a major global shipping and logistics firm, a project valued at €1 million that was initially announced in late 2023. The system is now fully operational, generating electricity by recovering low-temperature heat from the vessel's engine cooling system. It also has the capability to utilize excess steam to further boost power output when available.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, such retrofits signify a tangible step towards more sustainable shipping practices. By reducing the vessel's reliance on conventionally generated electricity, these systems contribute to lower fuel consumption and, consequently, reduced operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This can indirectly support shippers' Scope 3 emissions reduction targets and potentially influence carrier surcharges related to fuel efficiency or carbon pricing in the long term. While not directly impacting immediate rates or capacity, it reflects a broader industry trend towards decarbonization that will shape future vessel deployments and operational profiles.
