Carnival Corporation has announced plans to integrate Silverstream Technologies' air lubrication systems into its three new LNG dual-fuel Ace Class vessels. These cruise ships, currently under construction at a Fincantieri shipyard in Italy, are slated for delivery in 2029, 2031, and 2033. The first vessel, named Carnival Destiny, is expected to arrive in summer 2029. These 230,000 gross-ton ships will be the largest ever built by Fincantieri and will also represent the largest additions to Carnival's fleet.
The decision marks a continued partnership, as Silverstream's technology has already accumulated over 127,000 running hours across Carnival's existing global fleet. The air lubrication system is either installed or on order for a total of 18 vessels within the cruise company's portfolio.
For freight forwarders and supply chain professionals, while this news directly impacts the cruise sector, it underscores the broader maritime industry's drive towards decarbonization and operational efficiency. The adoption of such technologies by major shipping lines, even in the passenger segment, reflects a growing trend that could influence future vessel designs and operational standards across all shipping types, including cargo. Increased fuel efficiency can indirectly contribute to more stable operational costs for carriers, potentially impacting freight rates in the long term as the industry continues to pursue sustainable shipping solutions.
