Norden, a prominent dry bulk and tanker operator, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first maritime company to receive the Book & Claim Trader Certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). This certification permits Norden to register and transfer Book & Claim Units (BCUs) within the RSB Book & Claim Registry. Each BCU digitally records the sustainability attributes, such as emissions reductions, associated with a sustainable maritime fuel like biofuel that has been physically consumed by a vessel.
This system provides a standardized method for verifying and trading the environmental benefits of sustainable fuels, even when the physical fuel and its benefits are separated. It aims to accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuels by creating a transparent and credible market for their sustainability claims.
For freight forwarders and shippers, this certification introduces a new layer of complexity and opportunity in managing their supply chain emissions. The ability to trade BCUs means that the environmental benefits of sustainable fuels can be purchased and applied to specific cargo movements, regardless of where the fuel was physically used. This could facilitate more accurate Scope 3 emissions reporting and provide a verifiable way to demonstrate commitment to decarbonization.
