Lloyd's Register (LR) has announced plans to expand its Maritime ESG Maturity Index pilot project, following a favorable industry response to its initial report, "Measuring ESG Maturity in Maritime." The report, developed by LR Advisory, presented findings from the pilot project and was launched at Posidonia 2026.
The expansion strategy includes increasing and diversifying the number of participants in the index. Additionally, LR aims to refine its methods for sourcing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) information. This improvement in data collection is intended to enhance the accuracy of the scores within the index and ensure the findings more comprehensively reflect the global maritime industry.
For freight forwarders and supply chain professionals, this initiative signifies a growing emphasis on ESG performance within the maritime sector. As more carriers and shipping companies participate and data quality improves, ESG ratings could become a more significant factor in carrier selection and supply chain risk assessment. Forwarders may need to prepare for increased scrutiny regarding their own and their partners' ESG compliance, potentially influencing procurement decisions and operational strategies.
