BMT, an international maritime consultancy with over 40 years of experience in engineering, science, and technology, has officially joined The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. This partnership is set to bolster efforts in digitally mapping the world's oceans, with a particular focus on enhancing data collection and coverage in the Asia Pacific region and beyond. BMT's specialized knowledge in addressing complex marine environmental challenges will be integrated into the project's ambitious goal of mapping the entire seabed by 2030.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, improved ocean mapping can lead to more accurate navigational charts, potentially enhancing vessel safety and optimizing shipping routes. Better data on seabed topography could also support the development of port infrastructure and subsea cable laying, indirectly impacting future logistics capabilities. While not directly affecting immediate rates or capacity, this long-term initiative contributes to a safer and more efficient maritime environment.
