WinGD has successfully delivered the ANTWERPEN, marking the world's first ocean-going vessel specifically designed to utilize ammonia as a fuel. The vessel, a 46,000-cubic-meter carrier for LPG and ammonia, was handed over to EXMAR following the completion of its sea trials. It is equipped with WinGD's X52DF-A ammonia-fuelled engine, representing a significant step in maritime decarbonization efforts.
This delivery is the first in a series of four ammonia dual-fuel gas carriers commissioned by EXMAR. The development underscores the industry's push towards adopting alternative fuels to meet increasingly stringent environmental regulations and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, the introduction of ammonia-fuelled vessels signals a shift in carrier fleets towards more sustainable options. While direct impact on immediate rates or capacity may be limited, it indicates a long-term trend towards green shipping corridors and potentially higher operational costs for greener vessels, which could eventually influence freight pricing. Forwarders should monitor the adoption rate of such vessels and the development of ammonia bunkering infrastructure, as these factors will shape future routing and service offerings.
This delivery sets a precedent for future vessel designs and fuel choices in the maritime sector, with more ammonia-powered ships expected to enter service in the coming years as part of the industry's decarbonization strategy.
