KLM chief executive Marjan Rintel recently expressed considerable frustration over the ongoing delays affecting the Airbus A350 freighter program. Speaking at a roundtable during the IATA AGM in Rio de Janeiro, Rintel indicated that the delivery of these new cargo aircraft is now more than 18 months behind schedule.
These delays are creating significant challenges for KLM's operational planning, particularly concerning its cargo capacity and slot management at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS). The airline relies on new aircraft deliveries to optimize its fleet and meet growing air cargo demand.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, these delays could translate into continued tight capacity on key routes served by KLM, especially out of Amsterdam. Reduced availability of dedicated freighter space may lead to higher rates or necessitate alternative routing options. Forwarders should monitor KLM's capacity announcements and be prepared for potential adjustments in airfreight schedules and pricing as the airline manages its fleet without the anticipated A350 freighters.
