Switzerland has become a participating member of EuRIS, the European digital information platform dedicated to inland navigation. This development means that the complete length of the Rhine River is now incorporated into the platform, providing comprehensive data for vessels operating on this vital waterway. According to Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management, this is a crucial advancement for the international inland shipping industry.
Switzerland's inclusion in EuRIS is a component of the broader international COMEX2 project, which officially commenced at the end of 2023. This project aims to improve digital information exchange and coordination across European inland waterways.
For freight forwarders and operations managers, this integration signifies improved visibility and planning capabilities for inland waterway transport along the Rhine. Access to real-time information on water levels, traffic, and potential disruptions across the entire river will enable more efficient route planning and better management of transit times. This enhanced data availability can lead to reduced delays and more reliable supply chains for cargo moving via inland barges, particularly for shipments connecting to or from Switzerland.
