The Port of Shimizu recorded a 6% decline in foreign-trade container volumes in May compared to the same period last year, processing a total of 33,808 TEUs. This reduction was observed across both export and import categories. Exports fell by 9.3% to 16,335 TEUs, while imports decreased by 2.6% to 17,473 TEUs.
Specifically, loaded export containers saw an 11.8% drop, amounting to 12,041 TEUs. Loaded imports also decreased, by 3.2%, reaching 17,004 TEUs.
For freight forwarders and logistics professionals, this decline in container volumes at Shimizu Port suggests a potential weakening of trade activity in the region. Reduced throughput can lead to lower demand for shipping capacity, which might influence spot rates and contract negotiations. Forwarders should monitor similar trends in other Japanese ports to assess broader market conditions and adjust their capacity planning and pricing strategies accordingly. This could also impact schedule reliability if carriers adjust services due to lower volumes.
