The International Road Transport Union (IRU) recently approved a new global manifesto designed to encourage greater involvement of women in the transport sector. This "Manifesto for Women in Road Transport" was formally adopted during the IRU's General Assembly held in Geneva.
The initiative aims to make careers within the transport industry more attractive to women, thereby helping to mitigate the persistent driver shortages and broader labor challenges facing the sector globally. By promoting inclusivity and a more diverse workforce, the IRU hopes to create a more sustainable and resilient transport ecosystem.
For freight forwarders and logistics operations managers, this initiative is significant as it directly addresses the critical issue of labor availability, particularly for truck drivers. An increase in the number of female drivers could help stabilize capacity and potentially reduce operational costs associated with driver scarcity. This long-term strategy could lead to improved service reliability and more predictable lead times.
