As of June 1, 2026, the European Union has officially introduced new regulations governing the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions for both freight and passenger transportation. The European Commission has established a uniform calculation method, known as CountEmissionsEU, to ensure that transport emissions are measured consistently across all member states. This new framework is built upon the existing international standard, EN ISO.
For freight forwarders and logistics operators, this development means a mandatory shift towards a standardized approach for reporting emissions. It will require adjustments to current data collection and calculation processes to comply with the new EU-wide methodology. The aim is to enhance transparency and comparability of emissions data, which could influence carrier selection and route optimization based on environmental performance. Forwarders will need to ensure their systems and partners are aligned with CountEmissionsEU to avoid compliance issues and accurately assess their environmental footprint.
